This is an offical I AM OLD post. Snowflakes, melt away to your safe space. This is not for you.
I read this post by Mike Rowe and this quote is something I hear over and over and over again from several sources in other words:
“Currently, thousands of employers are struggling to find qualified workers to fix our cars and build our houses and keep our pipes connected.”
Why is that? With so many people whining and complaining about struggling, what is the profound disconnection? What is the profound problem with the American Skills Gap?
What about Work Ethic?
All the hubbub about encouraging children or adults with some sort of motivational reward they can work toward to improve their behavior is really not the problem.
Perhaps the discussions ought to be focused on the intrinsic value of work and intrinsic motivation needed to discover that any work is hard work.
The joy and satisfaction in accomplishing the work is the true reward.
Shoving candy or treats (rewards) into faces of children is not true satisfaction for a job well done. Giving everyone a medal for being nominated for possibility of winning the trophy just cheapens the cup.
External rewards that do not match the work ethic or skill are as an opiate to those who receive them so stop acting like a Pusher. Stop raising ninnies. Go back to fundamentals.
Wax on. Wax off.
Harsh? Oh no. I know a couple of mothers with austic children who could take you down over this subject. Their children could put many “normal” children or adults to shame with their children who are truly qualified workers.
Even my mother can still work circles around people a quarter of her age. (I would say how old she is but I would like to live to be that old.)
The joy of work for the sake of how working makes one feel must be reinstilled as a foundational principle for success.
Start the New Year Right. Wax on. Wax off.
